And yet, far too many digital products treat the mobile experience as a scaled-down version of a desktop design, rather than an experience built from the ground up for a fundamentally different context.
Mobile UX is its own discipline. The constraints are different. The context is different. The user's attention, posture, environment, and intent are all different from those of a person sitting at a desk with a large screen, a mouse, and uninterrupted focus.

They tend to have a specific, immediate goal — and if your experience doesn’t help them reach it quickly, they leave.
According to Google's research, 53% of mobile users abandon sites that take longer than 3 seconds to load. And according to the Baymard Institute, the average mobile cart abandonment rate sits above 85% — much of it driven by poor UX rather than lack of purchase intent. Best Practice 1: Design for Thumbs, Not Cursors
The thumb zone is one of the most important concepts in mobile UX. When a user holds their phone with one hand, their thumb can comfortably reach roughly the bottom two-thirds of the screen. The top, especially corners, is difficult to reach without shifting grip or using a second hand.
Steven Hoober's landmark research revealed that 49% of users hold their phone with one hand, and 67% rely primarily on their thumb to navigate. Navigation, primary CTAs, and frequently used buttons should sit in the lower portion of the screen. Destructive or irreversible actions should be placed in harder-to-reach zones to prevent accidental taps.

Best Practice 3: Simplify Navigation Ruthlessly
Navigation on mobile is a UX challenge unlike any other. You have a fraction of the space available on desktop, but users still need to find their way around a potentially complex product. The key is progressive disclosure — show only what's needed now, and reveal more on demand.
Bottom navigation bars work well for up to five top-level destinations. For deeper hierarchies, consider gesture-based navigation or search as the primary wayfinding tool. Hamburger menus should not be the default for primary navigation — research consistently shows they reduce discoverability and engagement with menu items.
Best Practice 4: Optimise Forms for Mobile Input
Forms are the most friction-heavy experience on mobile, and also where the most value is exchanged — signups, purchases, bookings, logins. The golden rule: ask for as little as possible, and make every field as easy to fill as possible.
Always specify the correct keyboard type for each field: numeric for phone numbers and OTPs, email for email addresses. Use autofill and social login wherever appropriate. Break long forms into clearly labelled steps with a progress indicator — showing 'Step 2 of 3' dramatically reduces abandonment by giving users a sense of how much remains.
Best Practice 5: Performance Is a UX Feature
No list of mobile UX best practices is complete without a discussion of performance. Every image, animation, and third-party script affects the user experience. Use skeleton screens instead of spinners to reduce perceived load time. Lazy-load images below the fold. Google's Core Web Vitals framework — measuring Largest Contentful Paint, Interaction to Next Paint, and Cumulative Layout Shift — gives designers and developers a shared language for performance goals.

Best Practice 6: Design for Interruption
Mobile users are constantly interrupted. A notification arrives, a call comes in, someone asks them a question. Your app must handle interruption gracefully — preserving user state, providing clear re-entry points, and designing flows that can be completed in short bursts. Autosave is one of the most underrated features in mobile UX. Users should never lose work because they answered a phone call.
Best Practice 7: Accessibility on Mobile Is Not Optional
Mobile accessibility includes screen reader support (VoiceOver on iOS, TalkBack on Android), consideration for users with motor impairments, users who increase text size significantly, and users in bright-light environments. Design with dynamic type in mind — layouts must not break when users increase font size by 2x or 3x. Best Practice 8: Test on Real Devices, Not Just Simulators
Simulators cannot replicate the lived experience of using your product on a real device held in a real hand. Touch latency, actual screen brightness, notches, safe areas, and the awkwardness of one-thumb navigation only reveal themselves on hardware. Build a device lab with at least a flagship iPhone, a mid-range Android, and an older budget device.
